This course aims to facilitate more energy efficient design through easy to implement strategies. Different insulation configurations can have a substantial impact on building energy efficiency. Although ASHRAE codes do not recognize that different insulation configurations in mass walls produce more or less energy efficiency, Oak Ridge National Lab research indicates that this is the case. This course looks at the sustainable properties of concrete and EPS, and then compares the energy efficiencies produced by different insulation configurations across multiple climate zones, The course highlights data from Oak Ridge National Lab research and other sources, and links are provided to those reports, and other information related to the topic.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
1.) recognize the most thermally efficient insulation configuration, among three commonly used in mass walls.
2.) recognize that equal steady state R-value does not mean equal thermal performance.
3.) recognize the definition of the R-value equivalent for massive systems.
4.) recognize that each of the three insulation configurations discussed here produces different effective R-values and (thermal performance) within, and across climate zones.
